Who Prospects for Minerals?
I suppose almost anyone can prospect for minerals but not everyone is going to be successful at it. You really have to enjoy being in the bush and must be driven by the sheer joy of finding something no one else has seen before. Money obviously motivates most prospectors. But I believe that successful prospectors are only motivated by money to the point of satisfying their material needs - which can be very scant according to some of their wives! It is the thrill of discovery that motivates all the prospectors I know. I think the same thing that sent James Cook around the world sends geologists and prospectors to the heights of the South American Andes, to the driest deserts of the Australian outback, the coldest reaches of the Canadian arctic and the most humid corners of the African jungles - prospectors want to crack open a rock where no one saw the rock. And if the rock glistens with the riches of Solomon’s mines so much the better but the cracking of the rock is the important thing.
If there is some Indiana Jones in you prospecting will appeal to your sense of adventure. If yo need a hot tub nearby, if you don’t like the smell of your own sweat, are lost without a roll of soft toilet paper and get cranky after a night sleeping on the ground you should be looking at a different website. If you think nothing of walking up a steep slope for 3 hours to find out why the rock up there is greenish - you belong to the society of prospectors.
